Dedication

This book is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Elliott Proctor Joslinˆ , 1869-1962. His lifetime efforts to conquer 'the gangrene' of insulin dependent diabetes against the odds of alienating himself in his own medical profession are a testament to his inner strength. I met the man on several occasions later in his life, when he visited Camp Joslin in Charlton, Massachusetts, while I was a camper there.
